Afridi is also currently recovering from a knee injury. At the MCG in the T20 World Cup final against England, Afridi had to limp off the field after suffering a knee injury, leaving Pakistan without a pitcher at the crucial moment. He showed signs of pain on the pitch, especially after a save to pull Harry Brook aside. When he slid down to grab it, he seemed to have injured his knee and was immediately in pain. He was helped off the field by the team doctor and physio. He returned later, cautiously running to deliver the goods, but was unable to proceed. He only managed 2.1 times overtaking it all.
Last week, the PCB confirmed no signs of injury on a CT scan and that the knee discomfort could be ’caused by knee flexion at grounding’ and advised rehabilitation in two weeks. Even then, ESPNcricinfo reported that Afridi is unlikely to feature in the Home Test games against England and New Zealand until December to January; The PCB said “his return to international cricket will depend on the successful completion of the championship fast bowler rehabilitation program and upon approval of medical staff”.
The injury is the latest setback for Afridi, who has been spending more time in rehabilitation since July when his knee injury first appeared in Sri Lanka.
Afridi continued with the team after it was decided that he would be in rehab while on tour. However, during the Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates in August-September, he was dropped from the squad and flown to London for further injury evaluation ahead of the T20 World Cup.
He eventually returned to play a role in the Pakistan campaign, gaining momentum in the tournament period before picking up an injury in the final. Afridi’s absence is a blow to Pakistan, who still have a chance to reach the final round of the World Test Championship in the UK next June. Pakistan is currently in fifth place, jostling in an extremely crowded mid-table brawl:
Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan and the West Indies currently have percentages between 50 and 53.33.
Pakistan hosts Britain for three Tests from December 1, while New Zealand arrives at the end of the month for two Tests and three ODIs. Pak Cricket 2022
